6:30 PM – 8:00 PM | RRH 225

Interested in starting a new restaurant? Come check out this panel of spirited restaurant entrepreneurs from all over the state of Virginia as they share their unique experiences on starting a restaurant, sustaining their brand, and dealing with competition. Everything from what goes into hiring your first employee to changing your menu! From 6:30 PM – 7:30 PM, each speaker will give a brief talk. The event will be followed by food (pasta, tacos, and oyster bisque) from the speakers’ respective restaurants! Get excited.

Giuseppe Scafidi of Deco Ristorante

Location: Richmond, Virginia

Food to taste: Pasta

Deco Ristorante is a Sicilian restaurant. Giuseppe Scafidi, the Chef & Owner, spent 20+ years studying in Sicily, both in the classroom and in the kitchens of his aunts and grandmothers. His recipes are taken from years of complex Sicilian tradition, with a bite of history in every dish. The menu is comprised of Sicilian Fresh Food, Salads and Antipasti, and entrees that include past dishes, veal, chicken, and a fresh fish of the day.

Tom McFarlane of Two Guys Tacos

Location: Charlottesville, Virginia

Food to taste: Tacos

Two Guys Tacos is a new restaurant located on the Corner of 14th Street and University Avenue. Tom McFarlane is excited to talk about starting a new restaurant and how their brand can compete with more established Mexican food chains, like Qdoba and Chipotle down the road.

Bill Dillon of Abbey Road Pub & Restaurant

Location: Virginia Beach, Virginia

Food to taste: Rockefeller Oyster Bisque

This past December, Abbey Road celebrated it’s 30th anniversary under Bill’s direction. Abbey Road serves fresh seafood, homed soups, and hand cut stakes and has one of the largest selections of domestic and imported beers in the state of Virginia with 101 varieties. Bill is active in trade associations and has served on the board of directors of the Virginia Beach Restaurant Association since 1984 and on the statewide Virginia Restaurant Association (VRA) since 1985.

Friday, February 1st

1:30 PM – 2:15 PM | Para Coffee

Innovate together. A new initiative launched this semester, Brewin’ Creativity is a weekly coffee chat held every Friday. Watch a short TED talk or interview with an entrepreneur, share ideas, meet other EG members, and enjoy a free coffee of your choice from Para sponsored by the Galant Center for Entrepreneurship.

Sign up for this week’s coffee chat here. This week’s theme will focus on Design Thinking and will be facilitated by EG officers Alex Mohr and Uzair Minhas. Participants will meet at Para Coffee and then gravitate to HackCville for viewing & discussion.

This week’s discussion will revolve around Tim Brown’s TED Talk urging designers to think big (not necessary to watch beforehand). Tim Brown says the design profession has a bigger role to play than just creating nifty, fashionable little objects. He calls for a shift to local, collaborative, participatory “design thinking” — starting with the example of 19th century design thinker Isambard Kingdom Brunel. Tom Brown is the CEO of the “innovation and design firm IDEO — taking an approach to design that digs deeper than the surface.

A couple key details:

- You may attend as many coffee chats as you wish throughout the semester (yes, it’s true. Free Para on Fridays). However, only one will count towards your membership attendance.

- Coffee chats will be capped at 5 members and 2 officers. The first five members to sign up will be able to attend that week’s coffee chat, so sign up fast! You will be notified on Thursday morning by an EG officer with confirmation of attendance.

- Have class at the time of the event or not interested in this week’s topic? No worries! Each week, we will introduce new themes all centered around innovation and rotate times.
